Like a Playground from the Ashes

In 1998 a group of families in Waverly (a neighborhood of Baltimore not far from where I live) got together to build a playground for their children. 7,000 man ours later the land was cleared and play structures were built. A few years later the YMCA came into town bought the adjoining land and built a center. They offered security for the park.

Last night the park burned. Today that same community group from 1998 was signing up people outside the YMCA to rebuild the park. I can't think that someone would burn down a park...a play structure. But from the looks of the damage it couldn't have possibly been an accident.

Over the next couple of weeks I'm going to work on this piece about the playground and those who are rebuilding it.

the kids have big plans though. they want to put in a train.
